A lot of my most popular writing advice is contrarian.

I emphasize writing because that's the teaching category I'm unfairly dropped into.

Truth is, I don't teach writing, I teach the process a writer needs to know BEFORE they begin writing, but I digress.

As I said, a lot of my writing advice goes against the grain.

For one good reason.

You see, without realizing it, most writing gurus teach you to FAIL.

For most of them, I believe their intentions are good. But what they teach doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in Hawaii of working for 99% of the people.

One of their worst decrees is,

Write, write, write. Don’t ever quit. Just knock out thousands of words every day.

Or any variation thereof.

They make it seem as if just hammering away without end is the answer to becoming a better writer.

But... again, unknown to most of them because many are just posers with very little REAL experience in writing REAL fiction. What they’re ACTUALLY doing is this:

You’re in your car in Paducah, Tennessee. And your desired destination is Sarasota, Florida. (For those of you who don't know, Sarasota is South of Paducah.)

So, your guru gives you directions to get on the highway going WEST. And after traveling for days, you complain that you’re not any closer to your destination. And they tell you.

You just don’t WANT it bad enough, man. Drive, drive, drive! Don’t ever quit. Stop whining and just put the pedal to the metal.

And what’s the problem with that?

You’re driving faster in the WRONG direction!

All that testosterone-fueled, “rah rah, get off your ass and hustle” B.S. is just amping up your adrenaline (and stress) levels. And that means you’re pissing away your precious energy right down the crapper with nothing to show for it.

I know from experience, it leaves you exhausted, discouraged and depressed.

So if you’re working yourself half to death trying to get ahead and be successful, STOP.
